Marketing Time

Like many writers, I have to juggle my time. I have a job, a home, family and friends to work around.

My writing time is precious and there isn’t enough of it. When I sit down to write I have to decide whether I will work on the writing itself or on marketing the writing I’ve completed. And I don’t know about you, but I would much rather write. I love playing with ideas and words!

Marketing takes a lot of time. I’m hoping that the more I do it and the more familiar I become with various places to send my writing that it will take less time. Maybe not.

The question becomes how much time do I devote to each? I refuse to be one of those people who just submit to everyone. All that does is bog down the system making it harder for everyone.

How much time do you devote to researching markets? Do you have favorite places to find those markets? What works for you?

It seems that every place has their own method for submissions, so you do end up spending time reading directions and reformatting to their preferred format, but after a while you learn all the basic options so it only takes a minute or so to set it up. For the longest time I skipped sites with – what I took as – overly complicated submission guidelines, but I’ve started checking them out more to see what I’ve been missing. I forget where I was going with this. 😀

    • I’m so glad to hear that it may take less time as I go. And I know what you mean about ‘overly complicated’ places. One that I looked into would have required me to completely reformat the submission and was very different from anywhere else I looked. So I skipped that one for now.
